The primary features in the vicinity of the Al-Ula Hotel is Mada'in Saleh (Cities of Saleh). This historical site was built by the Nabateans between 100 BC and 100 CE and later substantially destroyed by a flood of such immensity as to warrant mention in the Holy Quran.

What remain today are the magnificent tombs carved in the rocky hillside, of which the tomb of Qasr Al-Farid is particularly spectacular standing as it is, a monolith in the desert. Nearby are to be found the vestiges of the famous Hejaz Railway, including one of the original steam engines which once plied the line.
